Vision Therapy – The Tool for Visual Improvement

E-mail Print PDF

Vision therapy is kind of physical remedy for some of the diseased condition of the eyes and brain. It is a highly useful non-invasive therapy for various visual problems like diplopia (double vision), amblyopia (lazy eyes), squint (crossed vision), convergence or divergence difficulty, problem in near vision and some other learning deformities.

Vision therapy is mainly of two types – orthoptic vision therapy (scientifically named as orthoptics) and developmental optometry (used for some cognitive and behavioral diseases). Optometry deals with the visual acuity problems like squint and diplopia. The developmental optometry is contended with the psychological and behavioral problems like attention deficit disorder, inability to stare at a particular point or a field. This program is sometimes referred as vision training. Both of these procedures are often used in conjunction to get better result in cases of diplopia and squint. Both the procedures are highly sophisticated and engage dedicated computerized optical devices including various lenses, prisms, different clear and colored filters, eye-patches or occluders, devices for balance training and visual-sensory-motor coordination training devices.

Vision therapy is not just another visual exercise program. It must be done under close supervision of an optometrist or an ophthalmologist. Some children do not perform well in the class due to their inability in focusing the gaze. There are difficulties in reading comfortably and efficiently. Vision therapy can come handy in this situation. Although optometrists do not teach how to read well, they try to counter the problem in reading problem caused by diplopia or squint.

Orthoptic vision therapy and behavioral vision therapy – both are highly personalized for any individual. Eye exercises are recognized as an element in the multidisciplinary approach for the difficulties in reading and learning. The exercises are developed in such a way that they act together to correct convergence and divergence, accommodation and other motor function of the eye muscles. They can rectify the processing of the stimulus from the outside (like in cases of lazy eyes and in the dyslexics). Treatment for a mentally challenged child or adult must be a multidisciplinary approach. As the treatment centers curing the main problem for survival like having food and toilet training, vision therapy sometimes comes late in the pipeline. Nevertheless, if vision therapy can be started early in the disease, the patient can have little problem. The treatment requires a thorough optometric investigation of the eye, the optic nerve and the part of brain that helps us to see. A close liaison with other specialties will definitely help in giving support to the patient.

Vision therapy is usually conducted in the chamber of the optometrists or the ophthalmologists. Once or twice weekly session of 30 minutes to one hour is sufficient. The duration of treatment depends upon the nature and the extent of the problem. Patients are sometimes advised to take the exercises in their homes (home reinforcements). As the behaviors of the patients are different from person to person, behavioral optometry is also highly individualized.

Vision therapy is a boon to those unfortunate persons who face difficulties in their vision. If carefully and appropriately advised, vision therapy can improve the visualization a lot.

Our eyes are, by far, the greatest possession we have. Without it, the whole world will go into darkness. Unfortunately, as we grow older, the sharpness in our vision decreases. This may be due to some diseases or a natural aging process. Cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetes, retinal detachment, eye trauma, Vitamin-A deficiency, chronic purulent conjunctivitis are some common conditions to bring dimness in our vision. Nevertheless, we want our vision should remain perfect all the time. For that we have to adopt something that can improve vision.

We can do it by three ways – by modifying or supplementing our diet with vision friendly foods, modifying our lifestyle and by doing some eye exercises. Let us discuss about the foods first:

Breakfast with carrot soup – carrots are rich source of Vitamin A and beta-carotene. These two elements are very much helpful in proper vision.

Take 100 grams of blueberry pieces and mix it with 100 grams of yogurt. Blueberries are very much helpful in reducing the age related macular degeneration.

Aspalathus, an herb native to South Africa contains antioxidants akin to blueberry. It helps in promoting vision besides boosting up immune system.

Spinach is also good to your eye. Take spinach soup, steamed spinach or spinach quiche 2-3 times in a week.

Bilberry jam is another food to help in betterment of vision.

Sea fishes are good source of antioxidants. You can have them as much as you can.

Red onion, sweet potatoes, pumpkins are again good source of Vitamin A. Include them in your diet.

Extract of the Mahonia grape seeds can save your retinal blood vessels from UV rays. It particularly helps in slowing of the natural aging process of the eyes.

Now what can you do about lifestyle modification. While sitting inside your car, lower down the AC vents away from your eyes. Air-conditioning can create dry eyes. Regular exercise can improve blood circulation in your eye.

There are some exercises dedicated to improve your vision.

Sit on a chair in a relaxed position. A quiet environment is preferred. Rub your palms until they become warm enough. Cover your eyes by the palms in a cupped manner. Hold it until the palms become cold again. Repeat the whole procedure for 4-5 times.

Remove you palm. Firmly close the eyelids. Then gently try to open them with your fingers. Continue this procedure for 3-4 minutes. Then gently apply pressure over the eyeball with the ball of your respective thumb. Massage the eyelids in a circular motion for 2-3 minutes.

Open your eyes. Roll the eyeball clockwise and counter-clockwise. Each rotation should continue for 2 minutes. Make sure you blink in between the change of movements.

Now sit beside a window. Place a pencil or a candle about six inches from the eye. Now fix your gaze at the horizon. Continue it for 1 minute. Then rapidly fix your gaze at the tip of the pencil. The process of changing the vision should take less than a second.

All these exercises explained here are especially designed to improve the condition of the muscles present around the eyes.

Together with the exercises and the appropriate foods, you can improve your vision considerably.

Cataract – The Most Common Cause of Blindness

E-mail Print PDF

Cataract is a state of the lens in our eyes where it becomes opaque. In normal human being, the lens is clear so that light can pass through it and creates images over the retina. But in case of cataract, the light rays cannot pass the lens as it becomes opaque. According to a recent World health Organization (WHO) survey, there are more than 18 million people worldwide suffering from cataract. In most of the African and Asian countries, there is either inadequate reporting of the disease or comprehensive treatment is unavailable. All these factors make cataract the leading cause of blindness. It is also the main cause of dimness of vision in both developing and developed countries.

The common age group of cataract formation is beyond 40 years. There is no definite sex predisposition. But it is more common in male patients in the developing countries. Senile cataract (of the old age) occurs due to denaturation or coagulation of lens protein.

Cataract can be classified into three categories – nuclear, subcapsular and cortical. A nuclear cataract affects the core of the lens. At the early stages, eyes can change the focal length of the lens to focus the light over the retina by a process called accommodation reflex. There is improvement of near-sightedness if a person already suffers from it. Gradually, as the denaturation of lens progresses, the opacity engulfs the whole of the lens. At this time, a cataract is called mature and it can be operated. Subscapular cataract occurs directly in front of the retina just beneath the outer capsular covering of the lens. It heavily impairs the vision and a person can see colored haloes around the light during night time. The cortical cataract represents itself as white streaks over the outer cortex of the lens. It is a slow growing cataract and the impairment of vision is less than the other two variants.

Cataract can be the consequences of trauma to the lens or some infection of the mother during pregnancy (congenital cataract due to Rubella virus infection). Metabolic disorders (like diabetes), smoking, alcohol abuse and acute exposure to ionizing radiation can also lead to cataract.

In early stages of cataract, there will be dimness of vision or night blindness. The patient may see colored haloes around a light source. Double vision (diplopia) of a same object into one eye is another common symptom. As the cataract progresses, there will be frequent change in the power of the lens.

Cataract can easily be diagnosed by careful observation. An ophthalmologist will dilate the pupil by giving some medicine and will have a better look of the lens. A slit lamp examination with a specialized microscope will determine the exact type of cataract.

Extraction of the opaque lens and implantation of an artificial lens is the main treatment modality in cataract. Phacoemulsification (Phaco) and posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation is most commonly done worldwide. By this method, a foldable lens is carefully placed in the chamber as the opaque lens is evacuated out by a tiny incision. The other two surgical methods are extracapsular and intracapsular cataract surgery. After phaco surgery, a patient can go home in the evening and can join his normal activities after 3-4 days. Only after 45 days, he is prescribed a specs, if need be.
