Unpredictable periods.
If your periods are about as predictable as the stock market, ask your doctor to find out what’s been causing your irregular cycles instead of just treating the symptoms with something like birth control pills. You don’t want to overlook potentially serious problems. Meanwhile, here are some pointers to clue you in:
Relax if: You’ve traveled across time zones, been stressed out, or changed your diet or exercise routine recently. These factors could all throw your cycle off track, but it should return to normal within three months.
See your OB-GYN if: Your period lasts longer than eight days, stress, ectopic pregnancies, miscarriages, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, and oral contraceptives can all cause weird periods. But irregular cycle can also indicate thyroid disease, fibroid tumors, endometrial polyps, or polycystic ovary disease. Depending on the cause, your doctor might suggest medication or surgery.
Call emergency if: You’re soaking through two pads in an hour or one super tampon in 3 hours, and you feel dizzy or faint. Bleeding this heavy could mean that an ectopic pregnancy has ruptured a fallopian tube or that an ovarian cyst has burst.
